Teachers say timid parents blamed for unruly pupils

‘Middle class parents who fail to discipline their children for fear of tantrums are partly to blame for a rise in badly behaved pupils over the past five years, teachers have claimed.

Nine out of 10 teachers said they had dealt with a disruptive pupil this year, according to a survey of 844 staff for the Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), which represents teachers in state and fee-paying schools.

Swearing and verbal abuse was the most common issue, followed by shoving, bullying and breaking other student’s belongings. Lower-level disruption included talking in class, inattentiveness and “mucking around”.
