Teachers ‘devastated’ by online insults

Apparently more than one in five teachers had “adverse comments” written about them on websites, according to a survey of 7,500 of the union’s members.

Online social media is being misused to insult, intimidate and smear staff in schools, the conference of the NASUWT teachers’ union has heard.

A quarter of these insults were from parents – and there were attacks from pupils as young as seven.

The reports went on to show that these insults were posted in social networking websites and were attacks on teacher’s appearance, competence or sexuality. Teachers had faced racist insults, malicious allegations of hitting pupils, accusations of swearing at pupils and “inappropriate behaviour”, says the teachers’ union. There had also been threats made against teachers.

Pupils were responsible for most of the online abuse – but 27% was believed to be from parents and 9% was from parents and pupils together.

This is so wrong and in no way shape or form does Parents of Black UK pupils support or endorse that. Issues with teachers can be dealt with more effectively and not through insulting or smearing staff. Parents must show their children the right way and not join them in the wrong ways. Parents who ignore their children insulting other adults always have those insults come back to them later on.

Please parents, let’s talk to our children about this and make sure that they are not in any way part of this. We must teach our children the positive alternatives to dealing with any misunderstandings with their teachers, any adults in their lives or even their mates. Insulting, Intimidating and smearing people is NEVER the way forward.
