Summer Brain Drain

Have you ever heard the word, SUMMER BRAIN DRAIN?

It is known as the regression in skills that happens to kids over the long summer holidays. Apparently the top 2 subjects in which the summer brain drain are most likely to happen are in Maths Skills and Spellings.

Summer Brain Drain (SBD) is very common but please do not assume that all kids are going to be affected. Some parents do something about it and when they do, rather than their children starting all over again in the new term, they stay ahead of the game.

HOW PARENTS CAN HELP PREVENT SUMMER BRAIN DRAIN (SBD):

We can prevent SBD by planning ahead to figure out how we can expose our kids to some learning. Here are some suggestions that we came across:

ENCOURAGING YOUR CHILD TO READ:

Many of our libraries run summer reading challenges for the youths. Find out from your local libraries how you can get your children involved. These are free services and many children benefit from them.

EDUCATION FAMILY TRIPS:

Taking family visits to places such as the zoo, the science museum, a farm, camping, youth inspiring events can all help keep our children from the SBD.

SUMMER CAMPS:

Some youth organisations run summer camps where our children not only learn to socialize, but also can learn problem solving, self-esteem and self-confidence classes.

Other things we can do is to cook together, start up a summer book club, where your child and their friends can come together, and choose a book to read and share thoughts.
