Is it really right to judge a school purely from the league tables?

A parent once made a very interesting point on this question. We were talking about how a certain selective school came out with very high grades at GCSEs results year on year. The Parent said:

They select the best from the start, if they just admitted anyone and then got those top grades at the end, then we can say ‘Wow that school helps transforms our pupils, but if they have been very selective from the start and picked out the very best pupils, then of course we should expect them to have the best results.

That point does make a lot of sense and it makes the focus for any parent choosing a school for their children more of whether their children have the opportunity to achieve in the school of choice or not.
