How We Can Help Our Primary School Aged Children with Reading and Maths

READING:

Reading WITH your child is very vital. Research does tell us that it is the “single most important thing we can do to help our children’s education.” Reading little and often with them is key. No matter how busy we are, we must try and set some time for it every day.

Books aren’t just about reading the words on the page, they can also present new ideas and topics for you and your child to discuss.

Some Tips for helping your child to enjoy books:

  • Encourage your child to pretend to ‘read’ a book before he or she can read words.
  • Visit the library as often as possible – take DVDs as well as books.
  • Schedule a regular time for reading – perhaps when you get home from school or just before bed.

MATHS:

We are advised not to shy away from maths if we didn’t like it at school. Find ways to enjoy the subject with your child and we have added that we should not share our fears of the subjects with our children. Give them a chance to develop their own interest for it.

Some Tips for helping your child to enjoy maths:

  • Point out the different shapes to be found around your home.
  • Take your child shopping and talk about the quantities of anything you buy.
  • Let your child handle money and work out how much things cost.
  • Look together for numbers on street signs and car registration plates.
