Do You Know What Apps Are on Your Children’s Phones?

Technology has grown at a speed beyond imagination in the last 20 years. It is becoming widely common for our children as young as 10 years old (or even less) having their own phones. While I am certainly not advocating for what age is most appropriate because every family situation is different, a concern of mine is the sometimes lack of awareness from parents about the kind of apps that our children are downloading on their phones.

It is very necessary that we do not rely on our children’s basic knowledge of these Apps. We must do our own research by checking on the apps’s age restrictions and also making sure that our younger children cannot download ANY apps without our approval.

  • Most commonly, on an iPhone go into SETTINGS, GENERAL, and RESTRICTIONS. You’ll be prompted to create a code and then you can select any phone functions that you don’t want your child to have free access to without your approval.
  • Generally on an Android go into SETTINGS, USERS. Select ADD USER /RESTRICTED PROFILE. You will be prompted to set-up a password and then you can choose what they can access on their own and what they’ll need you to enter the password to access.

(Please note that this may differ on your type of phone –the above is just a general step)
