Can You Be Both A Parent And A Friend To Your Child?

We have heard time and time again that we MUST be parents and not friends to our children. There will always be an age, experience and power difference between parents and children. They are obvious dangers to being friends with our children.

  • As a friend, your child may not always do what you tell them to do.
  • As friends, the parent won’t really be seen as the provider, guide, leader and teacher that they are meant to be.
  • Emotionally a child needs a parent to be the grown up, it will be overwhelming for a child to told some fears from their parents, they are certain things we can share with friends but definitely not with our children.

This below quote says it all:

I think parents often make the mistake of making their child their confidante. The child is not morally, emotionally or intellectually prepared to play that role.
