Being a Parent to a Teen/Pre-Teen

Nothing is as uncool to a Teen as a parent trying to be cool

I read this today and thought to share it with fellow parents of teens and teens to be. These are facts that we already know but it is always good to be reminded of these things every now and then.

If it is so uncool to act cool, then we might as well keep our standards and not lower them. Be ourselves and be the parent they need at this ever changing phase of their lives.

Teens are at a middle road between childhood and adulthood. Sometimes they go into the child mode and we tell them to grow up and other times they go into adult mode and we tell them they are not adults yet. It can sometimes be confusing and that’s why we sometimes get the silent treatment from them or the ‘Nothing is wrong’ response to our questions. They do need our understanding and our patience at this time and if we don’t have that to offer, they go to their peers who are just as confused as they are.

The writer gives parents these tips that will help our teens

  • Be rational and not reactive- Parents must be the grown-ups at all times. We cannot help our teens to become an adult if we are not acting as an adult
  • Be their parents and not their mates- Our teens need someone in charge. If we leave our roles as parents to be their mates, who will guide them through this phase? Do we want to leave our teens to the fate of their friends who are as confused as they are?

BE THE GOOD PARENT, YES THEY WILL BE DISAGREEMENTS WITH OUR WAYS BUT OUR KIDS WILL THANK US FOR REMAINING FIRM WHEN THEY GROW UP!
